Plant of the Month - White Fringetree |
|
White Fringetree Chionanthus virginicus
Considered by British gardeners to be the best plant import from the New World, White Fringetree is a large shrub/small tree, ranging in height from 12-20’, with an equal spread. Its native range is the south eastern and south central U.S. The name comes from large loose clusters of white fringy flowers in early June, slightly fragrant, and effective for several weeks. Blue-black olive like fruit appears on female plants in late summer, and is prized by birds. Often the plant develops a rich yellow to golden fall color. Known for it’s adaptability, the plant can tolerate full sun to partial shade, and is good in urban sites where pollution is a problem. Does best in well drained soil, and requires very little maintenance once established. Use as a specimen plant, in a naturalistic shrub border, or in groups to attract birds.
